Patrick K. Arguably one of the war's most dangerous operations, the brenner assignment, it was led two OSS operatives who never met: Stephen Hall, a combat engineer trained in demolitions, the brenner assignment conceived and sold the plan and himself the brenner assignment the newly formed OSS; and Howard Chappell, a Fort Benning paratroop trainer recruited by the OSS to train the team of "shadow soldiers" who would infiltrate Nazi Germany under Hall's command. Unfortunately, the main theater of operations had shifted to France by the summer ofand the team was shorted critical the brenner assignment support.

With thorough research and new interviews, the brenner assignment, O'Donnell provides an insightful look into the internal struggles of the burgeoning OSS as well as a real-life espionage adventure of bravery, ingenuity and sacrifice. All rights reserved.

The result is a first-rate spy tale. Two heroes on the same quest, a grand setting, evil Germans, spies and traitors, and a beautiful countess.

What more would it need? I can already recommend this. It is a well-told, true tale. A taut real-life thriller. A fascinating tale of brains, brawn, and bravado. John C. Few writers give as much of themselves to bring history to life. O'Donnell tells it in an interesting fashion, and it would look good on any World War II history fan's bookshelf…A wonderful read, an intriguing story of clandestine operations in World War II, of heroism, sacrifice, tenacity, and romance…A thrilling story that will keep the reader captivated from beginning to end.

O'Donnell would make the perfect movie. Written skillfully and cinematically, this brilliant masterpiece highlighting the the brenner assignment of America's special operations reads like fiction, but is a true story. O'Donnell is a remarkably gifted writer who creates an entire world that draws in and envelops the reader.

His inimitable ability to take events the brenner assignment individuals from the past and breathe new life into them is a testament to his passion. One person found this helpful. Verified Purchase. I bought this book because I heard that it was about one of my father's best friends, Howard Chappell. I knew Howard's brother, Jack and his family very well. My father, Jack and Howard were best friends all throughout their lives, having gone to the same high school and going into the service at the same time.

They stayed in touch throughout the years. My the brenner assignment was very close to Jack until their deaths. The three of them had special nicknames for the brenner assignment other. I heard many the brenner assignment from my father about Howard's exploits in the OSS and afterwards. The book confirmed them and filled in some of the pieces - like a true trip down memory lane. The true story this book tells should be gripping, tense, and cinematic.

It has all the elements: heroes, the brenner assignment, villains, beautiful women both good and badspies, war, and more. Yet it is none of those. The writing is pedestrian at best, the brenner assignment, although it the brenner assignment irregularly for a novelistic flair. If it were drier, it might be palatable as a straight history; if it were better written, it could be a terrific page-turner, the brenner assignment. Sad to say, the brenner assignment, it's neither.

I'm glad to have read it, in the sense of having learned about an interesting time, and a daring plan, but I the brenner assignment wish the experience hadn't felt so much like work!

There are places where the failings might be blamed on a bad book-to-Kindle conversion, but there are far too many awkward turns of phrase, or thuddingly cliched descriptions, to ever enjoy the reading itself, the brenner assignment. Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase. O'Donnell worked with some primary sources and brought to life some very old and mostly dead heroic figures. Our admiration for the spies has to be very high as their energy, skill and bravery deserves superlatives.

But, the book itself often had difficulty hanging together the brenner assignment a story and though we know there had to be elements of boredom for long stretches in what these men did, and that should be related, we shouldn't feel bored, and sometimes I did. In fairness, some of that might be because the heroes were lost to us or very old and it is hard to patch the stories together. However, the brenner assignment, having read the works of some other authors, it can be done in a very riveting fashion.

The best parts for me were the descriptions of the local partisans and some heroic local women, though at times there seemed to be a sameness about them that is unlikely in real life, the brenner assignment. O'Donnell is a combat vet who specializes in bringing us oral histories of soldiers over the last century and he also deserves kudos for that. There may be more use in it in the long run than his own writing provides. I've heard him speak and was very impressed with him personally and what he tries to do on his website, so that writing a less than sterling review is a little painful like, the brenner assignment, I hope he doesn't read this.

However, if we aren't going to write honest reviews, what is the point of doing this? I can't give the the brenner assignment a higher the brenner assignment. Certainly its worthwhile, the more so the more you enjoy reading about WWII, but it will not likely bowl you over.

Very suspensefulsince I am familiar with the locations in this book. Format: Paperback Verified Purchase. Having lived in Austria and having traveled the Brenner Pass to Italy, I was deeply moved by the descriptive realism and empathetic conveyance of character Patrick K. O'Donnell brings to his pages. His detailed academic research is evident in every word, supported the brenner assignment extensive notes in the back of the book, establishing the factual basis of his historical examination.

When O'Donnell describes a rastrellamento, the Italian the brenner assignment for a German posse in search of Allied forces or Italian partisans, the reader can feel the palpable fear that shot through a region and shook to the core those living in the shadows.

While some were captured, others carried forward, persevering through the harshest weather conditions, driven by their dedication to the mission. The courage of the brave men of the OSS - Hall, Chappell and team - is visually recreated and we, the readers, are the beneficiaries of the writer's tightly written account. When O'Donnell states near the book's end, "Like most soldiers who have tasted battle and loss, a part of them remains where they fought," he touches poignantly on all battles endured by the human spirit since time immemorial.

An absolutely superior book about a little known episode of WWII. When I found this book I was intrigued because I have read a great deal of material covering many aspects of WWII and the one described in this book never once came up elsewhere. I recommend this to any WWII history buff.
